Outstanding Alumni – 2012

Commissioner Wayne M. Messam, CGC, LEED AP, BD+C is a graduate of Florida State University (FSU), earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Information Systems in 1997.  He was elected to the City of Miramar Commission in March 2011.

A first generation American, Wayne was the first of his parent’s children born in the United States.  He was raised by loving and hard working Jamaican parents. Growing up in the Glades, Wayne learned the values of hard work, discipline and the pride of culture, community and heritage.  He received full academic and athletic scholarships to attend FSU, where he excelled both on and off the football field.  He was a starting Wide Receiver and member of the 1993 National Championship Football Team.  He was very active with the Black Student Union and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.  He was elected as the 1995 Homecoming Chief and in 1996 he was elected as the FSU Student Body Vice President.  Wayne received the FSU Black Alumni Association’s Outstanding Student Award in 1996 for his leadership, advancement of student causes and service.

After playing football at FSU, Wayne was selected by the National Football League’s Cincinnati Bengals as a college free agent (1997 NFL Draft). After his football days, he quickly made his mark in corporate America working for Fortune 500 firms. In 2003, he co-founded Asset Builders d/b/a Messam Construction with his wife, Angela Sands-Messam (FSU 1996).  He is one of the fastest rising young professionals in the construction industry.  He is one of a few African Americans, in the nation, who holds a General Contractor license and LEED Accredited Professional credential.

In addition to serving the Miramar residents, he serves on the Board of Directors for the Broward County League of Cities and the Florida Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials. He serves on the Florida League of Cities’ Finance and Tax Committee and the National League of Cities’ Energy Environment and Natural Resources Steering Committee. He also serves on the National Board of Directors of the FSU Black Alumni Association, in which he is a Life Member and he is a Life Member of the FSU Alumni Association.  He is a proud member of the Beta Beta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and worships at the Fountain of New Life.  Wayne and his wife Angela have three children, Wayne II, and twin daughters Kayla and Kyla.

(Note:  This will be the first time in the history of the Association that an Outstanding Student Award recipient was later recognized as an Outstanding Alumni.)
