The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Book Stipend Awards

The purpose of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Book Stipend Award is to assist Florida State University students in completing their education.  Through a collaboration of the Black Alumni and the Center for Leadership and Social Change, three (3) awards will be given from the Center for Leadership and Social Change, and an additional three (3) from the FSU Black Alumni with the requirement that the recipients identify as African American, for a total of six (6) awards.  Awards will be for the amount of $300, and will be given to three undergraduate students, and three graduate students.  Awards will be as a check or direct deposit.

2016

The following students were awarded FSU Black Alumni Book Scholarships during the 2016 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.

  • Rikisha A. Collins ($500) – A freshman from Tallahassee, Florida, majoring in Political Science.
  • MarCherie L. Thompkins ($500) – A senior from Ocoee, Florida, majoring in English with an emphasis in Writing, Editing and Media.
  • Sophia G. Rahming ($500) – A doctoral student from the Bahamas, majoring in Higher Education.

2015

The following students were awarded FSU Black Alumni Book Scholarships during the 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.

  • Donae A. Adjei-Grundy ($350) – An English major from Miami, Florida.
  • Brittney Hicks ($350) – A junior from Albany, Georgia, majoring in Information Technology.
  • Brian Menard ($350) – A Psychology major from North Port, Florida.

Note: The FSU Black Alumni announced a $500 scholarship will be awarded to Farhan “Ronny” Ahmed, a 4th year biomedical engineering student, which will be presented to him at a later date.  “Ronny” was paralyzed in the shooting incident that occurred at the Strozier Library in November 2014.

2014

The following students were awarded FSU Black Alumni Book Scholarships during the 2014 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.

  • Mara E. Burnside ($350) – A freshman from Miami, Florida, majoring in Accounting.
  • Deonne J. Francis ($350) – An undergraduate student from Miami, Florida, majoring in Exercise Science.
  • Sainte-Fanie Jean-Baptiste ($350) – An undergraduate student from Miami, Florida, majoring in Accounting and Hospitality Management.

2013

The following students were awarded FSU Black Alumni Book Scholarships during the 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.

  • Nesha V. Drummond ($350) – A graduate student from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, seeking her Juris Doctorate degree from the College of Law.
  • Jasmyne D. R. Jackson ($350) – A sophomore from Lithonia, Georgia, majoring in International Business Management and Marketing.
  • Marlon R. McPhatter ($350) – A graduate student from Laurinburg, North Carolina, seeking his Ph.D. in Sports Management.

2012

The following students were awarded FSU Black Alumni Book Scholarships during the 2012 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.

  • Elizabeth Ogunrinde ($350) – An undergraduate student from Lagos, Nigeria, majoring in Biochemistry.
  • Shawna Patterson ($350) – A graduate student from Chicago, Illinois, seeking her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies.
  • Vanessa White ($350) – An undergraduate student from Miami, Florida, majoring in Psychology.

2011

The following students were awarded FSU Black Alumni Book Scholarships during the 2011 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.

  • Sade’ Tate ($350) – A graduate student from Buford, Georgia, who is seeking her masters’ degree in School Psychology.
  • Qua’Aisa Blackmon ($350) – A graduate student from Pensacola, Florida, who is seeking her masters’ degree in Higher Education.
  • Dahdrian Duncan ($350) – A graduate student from Miami, Florida, who is seeking her Educational Specialist degree in the area of Mental Health Counseling.
